Solar-powered irrigation to be constructed in Davao del Norte

A P100 million solar-powered irrigation project is set to be constructed in two towns of Davao Del Norte, according to the National Irrigation Administration-Davao Region (NIA-11).

Nelson Sahot, acting division manager of NIA-Davao del Norte Irrigation Management Office, said that the project is expected to irrigate 100 hectares, with the potential to expand to 130 hectares in the villages of Sagayen and Concepcion.

Completion of the project, targeted by  March next year in time for the wet season, will initially benefit 33 farmers who are members of the Sagayen and Concepcion Irrigators Association (Sacosisa) Inc.

Sahot assured that no villagers will be displaced during the construction of the said irrigation.

“Currently, we are addressing issues related to the road right of way, such as removal of trees,” he said.

Sahot explained that the solar panels will power the pumps, which will distribute water to the canals leading to the rice fields.

“Barangays or municipalities can request potential irrigation projects. NIA will validate these requests, considering factors such as population, area for irrigation, and water availability,” he added.

At present, the irrigation development in the said province is currently at 69 percent, with around 31 percent identified for potential irrigation.

“Good irrigation will uplift the farmers’ livelihoods. Since this system is solar-powered, it will save them money on fuel,” Sahot explained.

He said that NIA will continue to monitor and assist with the project’s maintenance after completion.

Meanwhile, Jaime Ardientes, president of Sacosisa Inc expressed support to the said project saying it will greatly improve their livelihood and their families will also prosper.
