The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) was recently recognized as one of the world’s most improved gateways by Skytrax, due to recent facilities and service upgrades.
The 2025 Skytrax World Airport Awards named MCIA as seventh most improved airport in the world, recognizing the gateway’s developments in better services and passenger flow.
Under the Most Improved Airport category, Skytrax – one of the world’s most respected aviation consultants – looks into the airport’s changes over the last 12 months and how these enhanced passenger services.
MCIA joins a group of airports from across the world under this category. Skytrax awarded the top prize for Most Improved Airport to the Berlin Brandenburg Airport, followed by Almaty International Airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport and London Gatwick Airport.
The Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport placed fifth, while the New Ulaanbaatar International Airport ranked sixth, both ahead of the Cebu airport. The Punta Cana International Airport, Nadi International Airport and Mumbai International Airport wrapped up the most improved gateway list.
MCIA operator Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. (AIC), who is undertaking the upgrades to improve passenger experience at the airport, said the Skytrax award shows that MCIA has the potential to become the leading aviation hub in the Philippines.
Singapore’s Changi Airport is named the best gateway in the world for this year. It is one of Southeast Asia’s busiest hubs, and is also renowned for its high-quality service.
The Hamad International Airport landed second for boasting one of the most complex passenger terminal buildings. The gateway houses the operations of Qatar Airways, viewed in the aviation industry as one of the finest carriers.
The Tokyo Haneda International Airport ranked third, followed by Incheon International Airport and Tokyo Narita Airport, stamping the dominance of Asian gateways in aviation service.
Wrapping up the world’s best gateways are the airports in Hong Kong, Paris, Rome, Munich and Zurich.
