Maboteng Gawain program to be launched soon at LRT 2 system

In a bid to invest in eco-friendly practices as well as to undertake minimizing its carbon footprint, Light Rail Transit Line 2-Systems signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Alpha Distinct Development Solutions, Inc.

LRT Line-2 System Administration Hernando Cabrera and Alpha DDSI President Michelle Bautista-Tanada commit widen their support to adapt to global climate change by ensuring most, if not all, the plastic wastes being collected at the stations will be upcycled and made into something innovative and useful.

Cabrera said the project has no expense and cost on the part of the LRT as Alpha DDSI developed a comprehensive circularity initiative to engage commuters and the broader public in more active participation in managing plastic waste, with a particular focus on plastic bottles.

On her part, Bautista- Tañada explained that the Maboteng Gawain Circularity Programs aim to foster a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility by providing convenient and effective solutions for the collection, recycling, and upcycling of plastic wastes.

“We will provide and develop plastic bottles wastes collection for recycling program as well as provide information, education, and communication campaigns to help our commuters understand that we need to act now. Mismanage waste system and unabashed throwing of garbage and wastes everywhere have cause floodings and impeded drainage system,” Bautista-Tañada said.

World Bank data estimates that the Philippines generates 2.7 million tons of plastic waste each and about 20% ending up in the ocean. Only a small percentage being recycled.

Cabrera explained that the strategic partnership makes recycling an accessible and habitual practice for individuals and commuters alike.

“Collection bins, bottle retrieval counters, as well as info posters and signages shall be installed with the LRTA premises to communicate the program to the general public,” Cabrera noted.

LRT Line 2’s estimated ridership last year is around 50.7 million passengers, with daily average of 140,444. In Aril 30, 2025, LRT Line 2 recorded 208,430 passengers even surpassing the Libreng Sakay program.

Both Cabrera ang Bautista-Tañada are hopeful for the success of the project.
