One million Filipinos living with dementia

Around one million Filipinos are currently battling dementia, the Department of Health (DOH) revealed on Thursday, warning that the number could rise as the population continues to age.

In an interview during World Alzheimer’s Month, DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo said dementia affects about 10% of Filipino senior citizens, with Alzheimer’s disease as the leading cause. Other forms, such as Lewy body dementia (LBD), also contribute to the growing burden.

“Hindi normal na maging ulyanin ang matanda. Kapag araw-araw na po ang problema sa memorya, sa pagsasalita, o sa takbo ng pag-iisip, senyales na po iyon ng dementia,” Domingo explained.

Dementia goes beyond memory loss, he added, often showing through sudden changes in mood or personality—such as once-talkative elders becoming withdrawn, or formerly quiet individuals suddenly becoming very talkative.

To reduce risks, experts urge the elderly to maintain good nutrition, manage diabetes and hypertension, and keep their minds active through reading, conversation, and social interaction. “Parang kalamnan din ang ating utak—kung hindi ginagamit, nanghihina,” Domingo stressed.

The DOH also warned against false health claims online, clarifying that no supplements are endorsed for dementia prevention. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and Vitamin B, combined with regular mental and social activity, remains the best defense.

The agency called on communities and families to support the elderly and help them live with dignity as dementia cases continue to rise.
