Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) president Arnulfo “Wick” Veloso announced fresh investment plans for major transport projects and the redevelopment of the old Jai Alai property in Manila, shortly after his suspension was lifted by the Office of the Ombudsman.
Speaking at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum, Veloso said the state pension fund is reviving the proposed intermodal transport hub at the corner of Elliptical Road and Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, patterned after the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX). He added that GSIS is also studying possible participation in a Pasig River ferry system.
“We will take the lead in making the proposed transport hub operational soon. These are low-hanging fruits. If you can make money and help in nation-building at the same time, you should do it,” Veloso stressed.
He noted that the Quezon City site is strategically located near the future MRT-7 station, making it ideal for a hub with shops and facilities that can generate income for GSIS members.
Meanwhile, Veloso confirmed that discussions are underway with government agencies and the City of Manila for the development of the 6,500-square-meter Jai Alai property across Rizal Park. “Sayang po iyon… art deco building ito. Akala ko nga nag-qualify sa Heritage Building Law iyong building pero nag-iba po,” he said, hinting at new plans that will be revealed later.
The GSIS chief also expressed interest in collaborating with private groups to push a Pasig River transport system forward. “Gusto ko makipag-ugnayan pa sa mga gustong mag-develop… Puwede po kami tumulong at maintindihan kung paano mapagtulong-tulungan, sapagkat pag naintindihan ko magkakaroon tayo ng anggulo paano magkaroon ng asset ang GSIS,” Veloso explained.Veloso, along with four other executives, recently returned to his post after the Ombudsman lifted their suspension.
