Determined to spur trade and inclusive growth in Manila, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso visited Quiapo to inspect the proposed site of the city’s first-ever “Halal Town” and to oversee plans for the rehabilitation of the iconic Golden Mosque Complex.
Joining him during the site visit were Vice Mayor Angela Lei “Chi” Atienza, Budget Secretary Amenah “Mina” Pangandaman, and other key city officials, who all expressed strong support for the twin projects.
The initiative aims to create a thriving hub for Muslim culture, food, and commerce in the heart of Manila—while preserving Quiapo’s deep historical and cultural roots. The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has already given the green light to fund the development of Halal Town and the major renovation of the Golden Mosque.
Before the visit, Mayor Domagoso had met with Secretary Pangandaman at City Hall to finalize preparations for the projects in time for the country’s hosting of the ASEAN Ministerial Summit next year.
He also conferred with National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) Regional Director Dimapuno Datu Ramos Jr., emphasizing the importance of establishing Halal Town as a symbol of unity and cultural respect—comparable to Manila’s existing Chinatown and Korea Town.
“It’s time our Muslim brothers and sisters have a place that reflects their identity and contribution to the city’s growth,” Domagoso said. “Halal Town will not only celebrate diversity but also strengthen Manila’s reputation as a global food and cultural destination.” TRACY CABRERA
