Samahang Plaridel Urges EAC Students to Uphold Journalism Standards

SAMAHANG Plaridel chairman Rolando Estabillo urged young journalists to uphold the high standards of journalism by following the lessons they learned from the classroom and the examples set by responsible journalists then and now.

In a speech at the Usapang Plaridel: Campus Journalism Seminar Workshop 4 held at the Emilio Aguinaldo College-Manila, Estabillo underscored the role of campus journalists in nation-building  through accurate and fair reporting.

“Natutuwa kami sa Samahang Plaridel na makita ang mga gaya ninyo na patuloy na nagsusumikap na tularan ang magandang halimbawa ng ating mga pinagpipitaganang mamamayag, gaya ni Marcelo H. Del Pilar,” said Estabillo in his short inspirational remarks before communication arts students of EAC.

“The challenge facing all of you now is to maintain this high standard of journalism even in this diigital age, where the use of AI is not surprising,” added Estabillo  during the workshop-seminar.

Samahang Plaridel president Evelyn Quiroz,.on the other hand, encouraged campus journalists to continue to strive for excellence.in their chosen field.

Quiroz thanked EAC community, led by  President Dr. Jose Campos,  Vice President Dr. Lorenzo Lorenzo, School of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Consolacion Luciano and AB Communications Program Head Dr. Melvin Espineda for their roles in building a new and responsible generation  of journalists.

Speakers during the seminar were  veteran journalists Nestor Cuartero of Manila Bulletin  (feature  writing)  Patricia Esteves of Philippine Star (editorial/news writing), Reynald Magallon of Manila Bulletin/Tempo (sportswriting) and Benjie Alejandro of Abante Radio/Market Monitor (radio broadcasting).

Also present during the seminar were Samahang Plaridel vice president Andy Sevilla, Legal Counsel Atty. Hector Villacorta, trustees Weng Ocfemia and Jinky Jorgio and program director Ed Andaya of People’s Tonight.

The Usapang Plaridel: Campus Journalism Seminar Workshop  continues at the St. Clare College-Caloocan on Oct. 2.

Samahang Plaridel was established in October 2003 with veteran journalists  Max Soliven, Jullie Yap Daza, Adrian Cristobal, Neal Cruz, Carmen Guerrero-Nakpil, Rod  Reyes, Crispulo Icban and Estabillo as founding officers.
