Laoang breaks ground on twin port projects

Construction has begun on two major port projects in the island municipality of Laoang, Northern Samar, in a move seen to boost maritime connectivity and spur long-term economic growth in the province, Mayor Charlene Lademora-Ongchuan said.

Ongchuan said work on the Mualbual Port and Laoang Port officially started on January 13, 2026, following a coordination meeting with officials of the Northern Samar Provincial Engineering Office (PEO).

The mayor described the twin ports as strategic infrastructure investments that will significantly improve coastal access, enhance inter-island connectivity, and strengthen local economic activity in Laoang—one of the province’s key trading centers.

During the meeting, site civil engineer Mark Anthony Mamaki outlined the project scope, construction timetable, and coordination framework between the PEO and the Laoang local government to ensure smooth and timely implementation. Discussions also covered construction readiness, community coordination, and the expected economic benefits of the projects.

Ongchuan said the Mualbual Port, once operational, will be capable of accommodating larger seagoing vessels, expanding port capacity and enabling more efficient movement of goods across island routes.

“The project is expected to support local trade, fisheries and tourism while contributing to the overall economic development of the Municipality of Laoang,” she said. TRACY CABRERA
