The Philippine National Police (PNP) proved the value of preparedness and swift action as its preemptive measures paid off during the onslaught of Super Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-Wong). Thanks to its all-out mobilization, the police force successfully safeguarded lives and communities in the storm’s path.
Before Uwan made landfall, PNP Chief Lieutenant General Melencio Nartatez Jr. had ordered all regional and provincial directors and chiefs of police to activate their Risk Reduction Management Task Groups. He directed every unit to coordinate closely with local government units (LGUs), local chief executives, and national agencies to ensure community safety.
“Coordination and empowerment are key to effective disaster response,” Nartatez emphasized, underscoring the need for unified efforts in protecting lives and property. His standing instruction to the entire police organization was clear—be ready at all times.
Under his directive, police units secured their personnel and families, prepared evacuation centers in coordination with LGUs, and ensured that rescue and communication equipment were in place. Field units were also deployed to assist in force evacuations in coastal, riverside, and landslide-prone areas, and to take the lead in rescue and relief operations once the typhoon hit.
The PNP’s national headquarters in Camp Crame monitored hourly situation reports to guarantee rapid response and to provide additional support where needed.
According to Nartatez, the role of the police extends far beyond law enforcement. “Our PNP personnel have always been among the first responders during disasters—providing not only security but also rescue, evacuation, and relief assistance. Their compassion and readiness embody the true spirit of public service,” he said.
Under Nartatez’s leadership, the PNP continues to live up to its core values of discipline, courage, and compassion—serving with both heart and purpose, especially in times when Filipinos need them most. TRACY CABRERA
