Survey says most Pinoys back affordable solar power

A recent Pulse Asia survey found that an overwhelming majority of Filipinos support making rooftop solar more affordable, citing growing electricity demand and the need for cleaner, more secure energy sources.

In a news release issued Thursday, Pulse Asia said 93 percent of respondents believe the government should make rooftop solar systems more affordable, reflecting strong public backing for policies that promote renewable energy and help reduce electricity costs.

“Nearly all Filipinos agree that the government should make rooftop solar more affordable,” the polling firm said.

The survey also showed that 97 percent of Filipinos are concerned about the country’s current energy challenges, while 77 percent acknowledged the Philippines’ heavy dependence on imported oil, coal and natural gas.

To address these concerns, 66 percent of respondents identified the expansion of renewable energy as the most effective solution, with affordable rooftop solar emerging as the top priority among renewable energy initiatives.

Despite the broad support, Pulse Asia said the cost of installation remains the biggest obstacle to wider adoption.

“While public support for rooftop solar is high, Filipinos believe that lower costs, better access to information, and affordable financing are needed to make the technology accessible to more consumers,” it said.

The survey found that 91 percent of respondents believe rooftop solar could become widely adopted if affordable financing options are made available.

Meanwhile, 85 percent of those surveyed said they already consider rooftop solar a necessity rather than a luxury, underscoring growing public recognition of its role in helping households manage electricity expenses while contributing to the country’s long-term energy security.
