LRT-2 extension to reach Manila Harbor with three new stations

The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) is set to expand the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) with a westward extension to Manila Pier, adding three new stations to improve connectivity and passenger convenience.

LRTA Administrator Atty. Fernando Cabrera announced the project as part of efforts to link the train system directly to the ferry terminal, ensuring smoother transfers for commuters.

“We are looking at two projects: the west extension, which will add approximately five kilometers of track leading to the Pier, plus three new stations,” Cabrera stated.

He further explained that the current endpoint at Recto will be extended to a new terminus within the Pier itself, allowing ferry passengers to board the train directly. The extension will also include stops connecting Divisoria and Tutuban to the rail network.

In addition to expansion efforts, Cabrera highlighted improvements in LRT-2 operations, noting an increase in the number of operational train sets.

“We’ve increased the number of train sets from six or seven to ten, with one more being fixed, making it eleven. Each train set consists of four passenger coaches,” he said.

To prevent delays, the Department of Transportation (DoTr) has prioritized securing right-of-way acquisitions and relocating utilities and informal settlers in affected areas.

“While funding is still being finalized, we are using available resources to acquire the necessary right-of-way, ensuring the project is ready for swift implementation once full funding is secured,” Cabrera added. TRACY CABRERA
