Campus journalists urged to stay credible

ASPIRING writers should continue to follow the path taken by credible and highly-respected journalists from the time of Marcelo H. del Pilar up to the age of lsocial media where fake news can spread easily.

This was the prevailing sentiment as four veteran journalists from both print and broadcast media took turns in giving valuable insights to 90 participants in the “Usapang Plaridel: Campus Journalism Lecture Series” at the E. Rodriguez Jr. High School along Mayon Ave., Quezon City

Nestor Cuartero of the Manila Bulletin/The Market Monitor, Lito Cinco of People’s Tonight, Frederick Nasiad of the Manila Times and Benjie Alejandro of Abante Radio urged young journalists to uphold the time-honored practices in the industry and protect their credibility even in the age of social media.

All four veteran journalists also talked about feature/lifestyle writing, sportswriting, news writing and radio broadcasting during the whole-day event organized by the Association of Philippine Journalists-Samahang Plaridel Foundation, Inc., headed by president Evelyn Quiroz.

Quiroz also presented a Plaque of Appreciation to ERJHS, led by principal Ernest Ferrer, and ERJHS Alumni Association, headed by president Ramon Ferreros for their assistance to the journalism lecture.

Jonathan Gesmundo of the The Market  Monitor also gave a lecture on the life of Del Pilar, the “Father of Philippine Journalism “, and his writings at La Solidaridad under the pen name Plaridel.

Aside from the ERJHS, also in the calendar are seminar-workshops at the New Era High School in Tandang Sora, Quezon City on Feb. 20; and the Jose P. Laurel High School in Gagalangin, Tondo on March 13.
