MATERNAL NUTRITION VITAL TO CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Micronutrient deficiency, or “hidden hunger,” remains a major health concern among Filipino women, especially during pregnancy.

According to the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), 90 percent of pregnant women are calcium deficient, while many also lack adequate protein, folate, and iron—putting both mothers and their babies at risk.

Health experts said proper maternal nutrition during the first 1,000 days—from conception until a child turns two—is crucial for brain development, growth and immunity. Poor nutrition during this period may lead to lifelong health and learning challenges that can affect a child’s future potential.

To help address the issue, Anmum’s Strong from the Start campaign is promoting greater awareness of maternal nutrition through education and partnerships with local government units and mothers’ communities. The initiative aims to help more mothers make informed choices and give their children the healthiest possible start in life.
