"On the Verge of Losing Faith (Finding the Way Back to Christ)" by Gem Suguitan

Facilitator-Host of “Sex Cinema and Society” virtual forum joins Lopenze artists et al in group art exhibit

In the spirit of the New Year and the good vibes that the Year of the Tiger brings, visual artist, writer, archivist and heritage conservationist Gem Suguitan has joined a virtual art exhibit at the lobby of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in Intramuros, Manila.

Collectively titled “Consummatum East: Is It Finished?” the individual artist in the show has revealed one’s proclivities on the idea of spirituality but without departing from the traditional artistic concepts and materials. To corroborate with the notion, the NCCA press briefs stated that “the artists, through this production, attempt to explore contemporary concepts and assimilate modern ideas and themes into religious art without losing traditional creative expression and artistry.”

Gem’s art work is billed “On the Verge of Losing Faith (Finding the Way Back to Christ)” on acrylic canvass which subliminally expresses man’s attempt to regain his faith amid uncertainties, doubts and tribulations.

More than thirty young, deserving and independent painters, including Lopenze artists (Gem’s fellow cultural workers from Lopez, Quezon like Tres Roman, Ann Reynales etc.) and from various parts of the country are displayed at the NCCA gallery from December 6, 2021 to January 31, 2022.

“This art exhibit has validated the many artists missions and aspirations to liberate society though religious art but not to pontificate but to inspire lost souls in our midst because of the surge of the new coronavirus and its negative effects on people,” said Gem, a facilitator and host of the weekly virtual forum “Sex Cinema and Society” done every Wednesday at 10 am Philippine time via Zoom as part the orientation on the release of the new book “SekSinema (Gender Images in Philippine Sex Cinema Enfolding Pandemia)” written by this writer.
