Association of Philippine Journalists-Samahang Plaridel, Inc., headed by. Chairman Rolando Estabillo and president Evelyn Quiroz pay tribute to Marcelo H. Del Pilar, "Father of Philippine Journalism" during the wreath-laying ceremony marking Del Pilar's 176th birth anniversary and Press Freedom Day on August 30.

FILIPINO journalists, both young and old, should continue to follow the example of Marcelo H. Del Pilar, the “Father of Philippine Journalism” and bring responsible journalism even in the age of social media.

In a speech before the formal wreath-laying ceremony to honor Dell Pilar,  Association of Philippine Journalists-Samahang Plaridel, Inc. Chairman Rolando Estabillo and president Evelyn Quiroz stressed the importance of emulating Del Pilar and the country’s other national heroes in nation-building.

The wreath-laying ceremony held at the statue of Del Pilar located at the corner of M.H. del Pilar St.and President Quirino Ave.  in Manila (in front of Ospital  ng Maynila) coincided with Del Pilar’s 176th birth anniversary and National Press Freedom Day.

“The best way to honor Del Pilar, known by his nom de plume Plaridel and the other national heroes is to follow their examples ” said Estabillo, one of the founding members of the media group named in honor of Del Pilar.

Quiroz said the officers and members  of Samahang Plaridel will continue to recognize Del Pilar’s contributions to Philippine journalism and press freedom not only during hjs birth anniversary (Aug.30) and death anniversary ( July 4) but in their daily lives in the newsroom.

Samahang Plaridel was established in October 2003 with veteran journalists  Max Soliven, Jullie Yap Daza, Adrian Cristobal, Neal Cruz, Carmen Guerrero-Nakpil, Rod  Reyes, Crispulo Icban and Estabillo as founding officers.
